Janet Curphey
Janet Curphey is a proud Wemba Wemba and Ngarrindjeri woman with ancestral connections to Wiradjuri Country and Warangesda Mission. Born into a large family as the second youngest of seven children, she carries the cultural legacy of her parents, Bes and Lorraine (Britten/Pinkie) Murray, from Yanga Station, Balranald.
Deeply connected to the land and rivers of Wemba Wemba Country, Janet’s weaving practice is rooted in the traditions of her ancestors—fish net weaving, basket weaving, and feather flower making. Her journey to retrace her mother’s footsteps has further strengthened her connection to these cultural practices, reinforcing the importance of storytelling and tradition through fiber arts.
Now based in Darlington Point on Wiradjuri land, Janet previously worked as a youth worker at Tirkandi Inaburra for eight years. She is now focusing on sharing her knowledge through weaving workshops and bush tucker plant education, fostering cultural connections within her community.
